//5p Review of Spyderco Dodo
//CONCEPT
//A highly collectable top of the line Spyderco. This knife is a very compact utility knife with a stout blade, solid four finger grip for your hand & a beautiful carbon fiber handle. Ultimately this knife falls into the category of design/art & the idea of being more handle than blade for extra control/precision. //FINAL IMPRESSIONS
//This is definitely a collector's piece. The materials, the minimalistic design, & the unique shape make it a show piece. For Spyderco fans this is a moment in time and is an interesting choice. Definitely well made but not the best for utility or defense. Use it as a gentleman's knife. |
//CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN
//Carbon fiber is a very rigid material but it also can chip or crack. An individual carrying this knife should be aware that the knife lacks much traction aside from the matte finish of the carbon fiber. The knife is incredibly light weight so it's not easily dropped & the overall design intent was to make a unique gentleman's folder that has minimal hardware & weight. //ROLE & APPLICATIONS
//Not the easiest knife to draw from the pocket and to open the knife you have to use the Spydey hole in the blade. The knife has a very small butt so grabbing the butt is not easy to draw the knife. Once deployed the knife can be a very good utility knife. Small tasks primarily since in a self defense situation the finger choil and short blade don't work well with slashing techniques and the lack of a point makes stabbing not an option. //PERFORMANCE
//The blade is actually quite usable but the majority of all cutting will be with the tip. This means the majority of sharpening will be the tip. S30V will hold an edge and will micro chip so diamond compound stropping is best. Next will have to be honing the edge. Overall the knife is barely noticeable in the pocket & once deployed has a very aggressive and secure feel in hand. In many ways the butt profile is similar to the Yojimbo 2 in that it tapers to a small point which feels good in hand but not good for extracting the knife. |
