//5p Review: MKT Arktika Folder
//CONCEPT
//With ergonomics designed for utility and lots of grip options, the Arktika makes a sturdy, well made utility knife. Designed with cold weather handling in mind, the knife features ergonomics for hand/finger indexing and jimping to help with traction. Though quite large and heavy, the overbuilt quality means the knife won't break under stress. //PERFORMANCE
//The blade is a compound grind, with a hollow for the belly section and a robust flat grind for the tip for better strength. The hollow grind helps with sharpening over time to keep the edge profile narrow.The blade is black oxide to prevent rust. The blade is 1/4" thick so is the thickness of most tactical fixed blades in the market. //With titanium hardware and handle scales the entire knife is completely rust proof minus the blade which is rust resistant. The overall knife is very large & heavy so is suitable for self defense. The glass breaker is proven to work and can also serve as an impact weapon. //ROLE & APPLICATIONS
//MKT claims the design was intended for cold weather in which hand sensitivity and dexterity decrease, so the design has multiple ergonomic cutouts for grip with jimping all over the knife. The blade also has a safety portion so if it disengages the user's hand won't be cut. |
//CONSTRUCTION & DESIGN
//Designed to be extremely strong and durable, the Arktika has a unique method of creating the locking mechanism area. The stop pin for this knife is internal but rather than do what other knife makers do which is create a circular cut out in the blade and put the pin into the handle scales (which makes the blade weaker) here you can see on the Medford that it's the opposite and instead the stop pin is placed into the blade and the space for it to travel is milled into both handle scales. |
//FINAL IMPRESSIONS
//The cost of these knives comes from the materials used, the dimensions & the cost to machine them. Extra thick titanium that is milled for the special lock design. Titanium hardware that is machined to make the knife rust proof in the handle. Completely made in the USA. The end product is something that really represents American craftsmanship & design. For collectors, patriotic consumers or people international looking for a representation of USA made tactical cutlery, Medford Knife & Tool offers something distinct & valuable.
