Blade Show 2011 Terzuola-Strider Collaboration Limited piece 1 of 25

Picture
Locking up with decades of tactical expertise.
There are two outstanding design features of this knife that are not initially to inexperienced eyes. The first is that the spine of the blade tang extends far back past the pivot into the handle. This helps prevent side play but also serves as a lever that is held down when gripped which prevents the blade from closing in case the lock disengages. The knife has a large choil in case it unlocks so that it will not cut your finger. Secondly the area where the blade tang meets the lock bar follows the outline of the lock bar & makes contact with two sides rather than the traditional top of the lock bar only. This means that even though it's a frame lock design the lock bar is secure when gripped & doesn't slide further in causing jamming/additional wear. Please note though that this does not prevent the lock from being pushed out & unlocked so the knife is reliant on your ability to support the lock with your grip. Mr Terzuola created the design while Strider created the lockup.

Strider construction.
Strider's custom screws & pivot are at the top for being overbuilt, unbreakable & durable in the knife industry & out in the field. This is one of the main attractive points for this knife which sets apart from all other tactical knives & is a rare combination that makes it outstanding. The open headed female screws & pivot allow for thorough cleaning of each part if need arises but the screws are guncoated for added corrosion resistance.

cpm 154-cm steel for the blade

Picture
This knife is meant for tactical or light cutting. So the steel choice works for what it's design dictates. CPM 154CM doesn't handle impacts very well from side forces (lateral to the blade) compared to s30v ( which is able to withstand sideways forces almost 60% more). Lengthwise along the blade the differences between s30v & cpm 154cm ability to withstand forces aren't much different. Some of the benefits to having 154cm steel is it's resistance to all forms of chemicals (biological or man made) along with resistance to heat. Also because of the M (molybdenum) the steel has more resistance to corroding unevenly in wet environments (this is not to be confused with rusting which s30v is better at not). The molybdenum in 154c(m) helps keep the steels structure & can allow for dry lubrication with graphite which is representative of it's anti-corrosion capabilities. The final thing is the steel wears well with Ti since it isn't too hard.

The Greatest Tactical Knife ever Made

Picture
Bob Terzuola's book has been quoted by other custom knife makers & his knowledge of the frame lock along with a reputation that's garnered him the title "Grandfather of tactical knives" has led to many refinements in terms of design that one cannot see initially. Mick Strider is very creative at making unique but highly functional knife designs & his ability to grind blades, along with his knowledge through the last decade of operating Strider Knives, has given him also a great understanding of the necessary design aspects for a tactical knife. The main unique feature is the lock up. This knife when gripped doesn't have the lockbar move inward at all because of the LBS & a unique cutout in the blade tang that limits the lockbar's movement. This design credit goes to Strider as Mr. Terzuola's main responsibility was to draft the knife's design & Strider dealt with making the mechanics work.

Important Notes & concerns for users

This knife's lock up is a Reeve Integral Lock/Frame lock which has a unique 2 points of contact against the back of the blade tang. After long term use this knife develop "lock rock" & so therefore can disengage with pressure on the back of the blade tang. This means that although the knife's lock will wear slowly with time & use, it is very reliant on your ability to hold the lock bar in to prevent it from unlocking. Regardless the knife features a large safety choil & still performs this method of frame locking better than all other knives because of the Lock Bar Stabilizer Disk & the unique blade tang which allows you to grip the knife firmly without the lock bar moving inwards & wearing out unevenly.
